Michigan State University Press is well known for publishing rigorous scholarship in a wide range of fields, as well as smart and appealing books on Michigan and the Great Lakes region. Our authors hail from around the world, and our books address crucial contemporary social and environmental issues.
Michigan State University Press publishes scholarly books in African history and culture, animal studies, anthropology, architectural history, criminal justice, critical contemporary issues, cultural history and humanities, environmental and natural resources studies, European history from the nineteenth century to the present, higher education, Latinx history and contemporary issues, Michigan and Great Lakes history and politics, mimetic studies, Native American history and culture, public utility regulation, rhetoric, urban studies, and U.S. history.
We do not publish unsolicited works of fiction, memoir, or poetry; Festschrifts or other commemorative publications; conference proceedings; or unrevised dissertations. Proposals in these categories will be discarded.
We do not accept simultaneous submissions. We expect you to grant us exclusive access to your proposal or manuscript while it is out for peer review. If your proposal or manuscript is out for peer review with another press, we will not evaluate it until that process has been completed and you are no longer working with that press.

Proposals should include a completed acquisitions questionnaire, a short letter of inquiry, two sample chapters, and the CV(s) or resume(s) of the author(s) or volume editor(s). Do not send full manuscripts unless invited to do so by an acquisitions editor. Unsolicited manuscripts will be discarded.
Proposal review typically takes six to eight weeks.
